(13/09/07) The trade union movement united yesterday to demand more rights and support for individuals who combine their work with caring for dependent family members.
TUC delegates in Brighton demanded greater access to flexible working arrangements, including paid time off for emergencies, and an increase in the carer’s allowance.
UNISON delegate Katrina Murray pointed out that caring responsibilities, for children or dependent adults, particularly affected women and is “one of the most important factors affecting women’s opportunities and career chances” at work.
“We need new legislation,” she said, “and we need an integrated public-sector duty.”
