Fire and rescue service
UNISON is the biggest union in the UK for fire and rescue service staff (non-firefighters). We have members in every brigade in England, Scotland and Wales.
Fire and rescue service staff perform a huge variety of roles, from cooks and cleaners to control room staff and emergency planners; from driving instructors and community safety staff to accountants and trainers.
The fire and rescue service is undergoing radical change as a result of government modernisation plans. These plans will see the regionalisation of much of the fire and rescue service; the promotion of a statutory duty to ensure community fire safety and the roll-out of an integrated personnel development system. In Scotland, the plans may lead to a common fire services agency.

Double Standards - The Current Position on NJC Pay
This circular brings branches up to date with the Con Dem position on public sector pay, the LGA response and what we know local authorities have really put aside for cost of living increases (following a Freedom of Information request). Branches are asked to keep up the pressure on councilors and MPs for negotiations to deliver a pay rise.

Council Finances: a guide for negotiators (England)
It has never been more important for branches to understand council finance. Guides are being produced for each of the devolved nations. This guide has been written to help branches and activists in England to understand the council’s finances and why council tax freezes and cuts are a bad idea, so that you can argue with your employers and elected representatives for alternatives to cuts and redundancies from a position of knowledge and strength.
